Quiet Echoes: How Adoption Issues Can Show Up Later in Life

This piece has been written to gently raise awareness around how adoption can affect  the child – often in ways unseen but deeply felt

This reflection focuses on the adoptee’s experience. Birth parents and adoptive parents have their own journeys, often carrying grief, guilt, hope, and complexity. Those stories matter deeply, and we’ll explore them fully in a separate piece. But for now, this is about the child — the one who had no say.

It’s not natural for a child to be separated from their mother.

Before words. Before understanding. Before reasons could make sense of it.

The body remembers what the mind forgets —

or didn’t have words for.

And that remembrance can echo quietly through the years, in ways we don’t always recognise as connected.

Yes, there may have been love in the new home. Yes, the decision may have been made with care, even necessity. And yes, circumstances — often difficult ones — may have meant adoption was the best or only option at the time. This isn’t about blame. It’s about compassion. Understanding. Truth. Healing.

Because even in the most loving environments, something can remain unsettled.

This is why adoption-related wounds often echo throughout life in quiet, invisible ways.

Core Wounds That Can Arise in Adoption

Some of the most commonly identified core issues in adopted children arising from early separation include:

  • Rejection – Feeling unwanted, left out, or disposable.

  • Abandonment – A persistent fear that those we love will leave.

  • Guilt/Shame – Believing “there must have been something wrong with me.”

  • Grief/Loss – For what was, what wasn’t, or what should have been.

  • Identity/Self-Esteem – A fractured sense of who we are or where we belong.

  • Intimacy – Difficulty trusting or letting others close.

  • Anger – A protective mechanism, often rooted in unmet needs.

  • Control – Striving to manage our world to feel safe.

These aren’t personality flaws.
They are survival strategies—coping tools the nervous system created to help a child get through the world.

How These Issues Might Show Up Later in Life

Many adults don’t connect their current struggles to adoption at all. It can seem like “just who I am”—until we realise it’s not. It’s a response.

Here are just a few that many adoptees experience:

1.     A Constant Search for Belonging – Feeling like an outsider, even in spaces that “should” feel safe.

2.     Hyper-Independence – Not asking for help, because somewhere inside, there’s a belief it won’t come.

3.     Rejection Sensitivity – Small slights or misunderstandings can hit hard, much harder than others might expect.

4.     Relationship Challenges – Struggles with intimacy, vulnerability, or trust. The fear of abandonment whispers loudly.

5.     People-Pleasing – A deep need to be liked or accepted, even at your own expense.

6.     Emotional Numbness or Detachment – Finding it difficult to connect to feelings — your own or others’.

7.     Achievement as Proof of Worth – Believing that if you just achieve enough, you’ll finally feel “enough”.

8.     Deep Loneliness – Even when surrounded by others. Even when loved.

You are not imagining these patterns. They are real. And they are valid.

Why Hypnotherapy Can Be So Powerful for Adoption Healing

Traditional therapies like CBT or talk therapy can be useful—no doubt.
But when the wound is pre-verbal, logic alone doesn’t reach the roots.

Hypnotherapy is uniquely positioned to help because it bypasses the conscious mind and speaks directly to the emotional mind—the subconscious. The part of us that stores emotion, memory, and identity. Through hypnosis and somatic work, we access the mind-body connection where many of these patterns live.

It’s not about erasing the past.
It’s about meeting the younger part of you with compassion.
Soothing the nervous system.
Restoring a sense of safety.
Creating new, healthier patterns going forward.

Coming Home to You

This is your reminder:
You are enough.
You are not too much.
You are not unlovable.
And you deserve to love yourself as deeply and fiercely as you love others.
Your survival was never a mistake.
Your coping mechanisms were brilliant adaptations.
And now—when you're ready—you can begin to soften them.
Because who you are is unfolding with strength and grace.
Because this next chapter asks less of your defences and more of your heart.

And if any part of this resonates with you, please know you are not alone. You're not “crazy” for feeling what you feel. You’re responding exactly as a human would, based on what your system went through.

If you're ready to explore this more deeply or want to talk about how hypnotherapy might help, you’re welcome to reach out.

Let’s walk that path together—home to yourself.

Adoption and Hypnotherapy: Working with Adoption – A hypnotherapy Approach

Adoption is a complex and life-changing experience that significantly impacts the lives of adoptees, adoptive parents, and birth parents. It involves more than the legal and physical transition of a child from one family to another; it encompasses a profound emotional and psychological journey.

As an adoptee and someone who works with the issue on adoption in my practice, I am acutely aware of the issues that arise, both having lived some myself and worked with others to heal them.

For Adoptees it is a foundational event and while life continues post adoption, the effects shape the direction of many adoptees. Many grapple with questions of identity, belonging, and self-worth, while adoptive parents navigate the challenges of building trust and attachment.

Birth parents, on the other hand, may experience deep feelings of loss and grief. Each individual's experience is unique, shaped by their personal history, the circumstances of the adoption, and the support systems available to them.

The Psychological and Emotional Landscape

The psychological and emotional effects of adoption can be far-reaching. Adoptees can face issues such as:

•             Attachment Disorders: Early disruptions in bonding can lead to difficulties in forming secure attachments later in life.

•             Identity and Self-Esteem Issues: Struggles with identity and self-worth are common, particularly during adolescence and adulthood.

•             Trauma and Loss: Many adoptees have experienced trauma or significant loss, which can manifest in various emotional and behavioural challenges.

Adoptive parents may also encounter emotional hurdles, including feelings of inadequacy, fear of rejection, or difficulty in addressing their child's unique needs. Birth parents often carry a burden of unresolved grief and loss that requires compassionate and skilled intervention.

Hypnotherapy as a Healing Modality

Hypnotherapy offers a powerful and versatile approach to addressing the complex emotional and psychological challenges associated with adoption. By accessing the subconscious mind, hypnotherapy can help individuals process deep-seated emotions, heal from past traumas, and develop healthier coping mechanisms.

Here are some ways hypnotherapy can be beneficial:

•             Facilitating Emotional Healing: Helping adoptees and birth parents process feelings of grief, loss, and trauma.

•             Enhancing Self-Esteem and Identity: Assisting adoptees in exploring and affirming their identity and self-worth.

•             Strengthening Attachment and Bonding: Supporting adoptive parents and children in building secure and trusting relationships.

•             Reducing Anxiety and Stress: Providing tools to manage anxiety, stress, and other emotional difficulties related to adoption experiences.

In My Experience

As an adoptee myself and worked with many people who have experience of the effects of adoption, I have significant experience in helping clients to over come any difficulties they have arising from adoption. I am also a trainer of hypnotherapists to work with adoption related issues.

The approach varies for each, whether it’s an adoptee, a birth parent, or a adopting parent.

A adoptee is often unaware of the effects of adoption as they occurred before the child could speak or remember, yet may have had profound effects. The effects are in the unconscious mind and using hypnotherapy I help the client access those beliefs and behavious and facilitate change to a positive outcome for them.

The effects are different for birth and adopting parents, yet hypnotherapy is a very effective tool to help overcome any negative effects they may have experienced.

FND and Hypnotherapy: A New Frontier in Healing-

FND diagnosis is become more common. In this blog, we look at this topic that's been gaining attention in the medical community: Functional Neurological Disorder (FND) and the potential of hypnotherapy as a treatment option. If you're wondering what FND is or how hypnotherapy might help, you're in the right place. Grab a cup of tea, get comfortable, and let's explore this fascinating subject together.

FND is a complex condition that affects many people, often causing significant disruption to their daily lives. But there's hope on the horizon, with hypnotherapy emerging as a promising approach to managing FND symptoms. In this blog post, we'll break down what FND is, how it affects people, and why hypnotherapy might be a game-changer in its treatment.

Section 1: Understanding Functional Neurological Disorder

Functional Neurological Disorder, commonly known as FND, is a condition that affects the nervous system. Unlike many neurological disorders, FND isn't caused by structural damage to the brain or nerves. Instead, it's a problem with how the brain and body communicate and function together, and how when that

People with FND can experience a wide range of symptoms. These may include:

1. Weakness or paralysis

2. Non-epileptic seizures

3. Tremors or involuntary movements

4. Speech difficulties

5. Vision problems

6. Sensory issues

The exact cause of FND isn't fully understood, which is part of what makes it so challenging to treat. Some researchers believe it may be triggered by stress or trauma, while others suggest it could be related to how the brain processes information. What we do know is that FND is more common than many people realize.

A 2020 study published in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery & Psychiatry found that FND accounts for about 16% of all neurology outpatient visits. This statistic highlights just how prevalent FND is and underscores the urgent need for effective treatment options.

In a review of 35 studies of Hypnotherapy and FND , 1584 patients receiving intervention, 1379 (87%) showed significant improvements, and more than 75% had a resolution on near resolution in the short-term.

Section 2: Enter Hypnotherapy

Now let's talk about hypnotherapy and why it's generating buzz as a potential treatment.

Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic technique that uses hypnosis to create a state of focused attention and heightened suggestibility. In this state, individuals may be more open to therapeutic suggestions and better able to address underlying issues contributing to their symptoms.

But how might this apply to FND? Well, remember how we mentioned that FND involves a communication breakdown between the brain and body? Hypnotherapy aims to bridge that gap by working directly with the unconscious mind.

During a hypnotherapy session for FND, a trained therapist might guide the patient into hypnosis and then offer suggestions aimed at:

1.      Reducing stress and anxiety, which can exacerbate FND symptoms

               2.  Helping to alleviate the emotional charge around traumatic causes.

               3.  Improving communication between the mind and body

               4. Enhancing the patient's sense of control over their symptoms

While research on hypnotherapy for FND is still in its early stages, some studies have shown promising results. A 2017 case study published in the International Journal of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis reported significant improvement in FND symptoms following hypnotherapy treatment. The patient in this study experienced a reduction in non-epileptic seizures and improved quality of life.

In another study of 1584 patient, it was found that in 85% of patients demonstrated clinically significant improvements and in more than 75% had a resolution or near resolution of symptoms in the short-term.

It's important to note that while these results are encouraging, more large-scale studies are needed to fully understand the effectiveness of hypnotherapy for FND. However, given the limited treatment options currently available for FND, hypnotherapy represents an exciting avenue for further research and potential relief for those suffering from this challenging condition.

In My Experience

In my clinic I have significant experience of FND and helping clients to alleviate or eliminate the symptoms.

The approach is to work with the unconscious mind to release trauma that it stores it for a purpose. It's aiming to protect the client however it's having an adverse effect on their health.

The approach is to work with the unconscious mind in the cases of store trauma to release any  negative emotion and then to work with the mind and body to allow the immune system to heal.

This approach has been successful for many clients and if you suffer with FND and need support, please contact myself or a qualified hypnotherapist who deals with this issue. As many of my clients will report, there is a relief from and solution to this condition through hypnotherapy.
