Adoption & Early Childhood Trauma
Identity, Belonging & the Nervous System
Adoption is often described as a story of love, rescue, and new beginnings.
And in many cases, it is.
But for many adoptees, especially where separation occurred in early infancy, there can also be a quieter and often misunderstood experience unfolding beneath the surface.
Early separation, loss, disruption in attachment, or emotional uncertainty can shape how safe the world feels, how relationships are experienced, and how identity develops over time.
Many of these experiences happened before language or conscious memory existed, yet the nervous system and unconscious mind may still carry the imprint.
At Empower Hypnotherapy, the focus is on helping people understand how these early experiences may continue influencing emotional wellbeing, confidence, relationships, behaviour, stress responses, and identity later in life.
The Nervous System Remembers
When adoption or separation occurs in early life, the experience can become what is often described as pre-verbal trauma.
There may be no clear memories or conscious understanding of what happened, yet the body and nervous system can still carry emotional patterns linked to safety, connection, rejection, loss, or uncertainty.
Over time, these patterns may show up as:
anxiety or hypervigilance
people pleasing
emotional suppression
fear of rejection or abandonment
difficulty trusting others
perfectionism or overachieving
relationship difficulties
feeling disconnected or different
low self-worth
emotional overwhelm
coping behaviours or compulsive patterns
These are not signs that someone is weak or flawed.
Often, they are intelligent adaptations developed very early in life to help the nervous system feel safe.
Identity & Early Experience
One of the deepest effects of adoption and early childhood trauma is often identity.
Questions such as:
Who am I?
Where do I belong?
Am I wanted?
Am I safe?
Will people leave?
can shape unconscious beliefs, emotional responses, and behaviour throughout life.
Many people try to change behaviour without recognising the deeper identity patterns underneath.
At Empower Hypnotherapy, the goal is not simply to manage symptoms, but to help people begin reconnecting with safety, confidence, self-worth, emotional regulation, and a stronger sense of identity.
The Empower Approach
Empower Hypnotherapy uses a compassionate, trauma-informed approach that combines:
hypnotherapy
nervous system regulation
emotional processing
identity-level change work
unconscious pattern updating
practical neuroscience
Hypnosis is not simply about relaxation.
It creates the emotional safety that allows the mind and body to begin updating patterns that may no longer serve.
The focus is always on working gently, safely, and collaboratively, helping clients process emotional experiences, regulate the nervous system, and begin moving from identity shaped by survival towards identity shaped by conscious choice.
A Personal Understanding
As an adoptee himself, John understands that the effects of adoption are often far deeper than many people realise.
Some experiences occurred before words or conscious memory existed, yet can still shape emotional responses, relationships, nervous system patterns, and identity later in life.
Alongside his personal experience, John has worked extensively with adoptees, birth parents, and adoptive parents, helping people better understand and process the emotional impact of adoption in a compassionate and supportive way.
John also trains hypnotherapists and therapists in working with adoption-related issues and early childhood trauma.
Client Experiences
“He helped me get rid of negative thoughts and the anxious knot I constantly had in my stomach.”
“I found the better, more confident person that I had lost.”
